Wednesday Wanderings

We had a grocery pick up in town the other day and had to take a detour because of road construction. On the way we discovered this brand new nature park so The Mister thought it would be a good idea to explore a little.

I had my misgivings. I was hardly dressed for a hike. I was actually in my pj's. I had just thrown on a sweatshirt and a pair of baggy flannel pants over them for the ride over. The parking lot showed promise of some fall splendor and since there wasn't another soul in sight off I went.

We did a lot of walking...I was starting to get concerned. The paths were sparsely marked and we had no idea where we were going or how we were going to find our way back.

Then there was Pup. Since her hip surgery when she's had enough, she's had enough. Even on short walks she will sit when she's done and we have to carry her. She hung tough for a while but was over it right about the same time I was. By now I wanted to strangle The Mister for thinking this was a good idea. Two oldies and a fat, lame dog lost in the woods. I could see the headlines when they found our bodies.

Then we came to a spot that showed signs of life. The little sign says that two boys designed this space to bring hikers happiness.

It was a long log decorated with all kinds of cute things. We decided to head into the direction the log was pointing and after a while we managed to find our way back to the other side of the nature trail where we could finally orient ourselves enough to find our car. Whew. Never again.

  2. Leave it to kids to spark happiness and hope. I’m glad you found your way out of the woods.

  4. Oh that reminds of a "hike" we went on with my uncle when I was about 8. It was just him (he was in his early-mid 20s, my brother (who was about 10) and I. He got us hopelessly lost in a large wooded area about a 20 minute drive from our home. After a couple hours of walking and not getting back to the car park, finally, my brother and I (who knew the area better than he did, thanks to scouting events there) convinced him that if we just followed the creek, we'd either come out at the parking lot we parked in, or in a populated area, where we could at least call our mom. Happily, we picked the right direction and ended up at the car park... we got home safely (if later than planned) and had quite an exciting tale for Mom. Though we never went hiking with that uncle again... lol

  5. You made it! Whew! How fun though, to explore a new place. And at least Pup is small enough to carry, not a St. Bernard! Ha! (See, I'm trying to look on the bright side of things as Dennis is trying to teach me.) I love the cute log to cheer people on in their journey.
    Blessings and love,
    Betsy

  6. LOL, back when I used to run, I went on a run like that. Alone in a wooded park I'd never been in before. The only thing that kept me going was the knowledge my husband would bring me back to life and kill me all over again for doing something so stupid. I hadn't even told anyone where I was going. I did have a bottle of water though, and finally found my way out an hour after I started to freak out a little. Glad you had a cute log to help direct you.
