Hand Washing

Remember when our downstairs flooded from the washing machine? I didn't tell you the whole story. That's Hoover sleeping on his bed with his little blankie. It was his fault.

Kind of. I have lots of cat and dog beds all over the house with little fleece blankies in them. I change them every other day so that leads to a lot of washing and unfortunately for the washer lots of fuzz in the pipes. After snaking the drain for hours, The Mister said I was forbidden to put them in the washer anymore. Now I hand wash the blankies in a bucket and don't pour the water in a drain where it might clog. Then when I was at Ikea a while back I saw this indoor drying rack, had to have it and-an obsession was born.

I'm always looking for things to handwash now. I do my little cotton house dresses. They dry in a flash.

My cotton aprons do too. Tea towels and handknit wash cloths also.

I add a bit of lavender to the rinse water and it is heaven to slip on a cool, crisp little dress in the morning. I am hooked. At least for the summer. I discovered by listening to a podcast the other day that I am not alone. Apparently there is a cult of hand washing fanatics. Just go to YouTube and see for yourself.

  1. Where do you find your cotton house dresses? I desperately need some ne wines and I can't sit at my sewing machine right now because of my back. Love the drying rack and may just need to purchase one myself. It would b great for he lake too in the summertime.

  3. I've never minded hand washing. And love drying things on my clothesline. But, I do use the washer and dryer a lot (still trying to figure how just 2 people generate so much laundry - LOL).

  6. I don't handwash much but my knits (and only cardigans, socks go in the washer), but I hang a tonne of stuff to dry instead of using the dryer. Old Navy stuff has a tendency to shrink badly if you put it in the dryer

In the old house, I had Dave string a line in the basement. Here, who ever lived here before us already put one up (four lines actually!)

I'd have an outdoor line if I could. I grew up with line-dried clothes and I love it!

    1. If we didn't have so many bugs I would have an outdoor line too. I love lined dried linens. It was my mom's therapy.

  7. Oh My goodness. I hope I resist the cult! Im so lazy with laundry. I think I've ironed twice in our married life. We should just donate the iron. My NANA ironed all the time. It was like therapy for her. I didnt get that gene!

  8. I was wondering about those cute housedresses, too! What a wonderful idea of just a drop of lavender. I love that you have ideas that I can actually do - nothing too difficult but very clever!

    1. There is one near Daddio's nursing home in Annapolis. I rarely go in there but when I do I always find something I need!
