Don't Quit Your Day Job

I couldn't wait to get my sewing side of the room back in order so I could get back to work on what I thought was an easy, stress free project.

It's not. My scrappy sashing is a nightmare. I tried so many ways to get it to work out mathematically so the little blocks line up in a way that made sense. Of course they wouldn't so I was irked.

After I gave up on that mess I decided it might be better to work on something I knew was easier so I picked up the rings quilt only to find......

....the blue Chaco marker I had been using for the border was missing. I looked everywhere and couldn't find it. I was even more irked. I went online to get another and read some reviews only to discover people complaining that the blue DOESN'T WASH OUT. So now I have a permanent blue lines where all my straight line quilting is? At that point my level of irk went off the charts. I was done for the day. Maybe the week.

Grumble, grumble....I should have just done what I usually do. When quilting straight lines I used to just use a piece of masking tape to show me the way. Some times the old ways are the best.

  1. Yep. Old ways are the best. Sometimes we don't need all of the newfangled gadgets. Both of those quilts are beautiful.

  3. The sashing looks fine on the hexagon quilt! Some days are just not meant to play...
I bet the blue will wash out-but the masking tape is a great idea!

  4. I'm pretty sure my Mom has one of those chalk thingies (I remember her talking about the controversy of it not washing out) I don't think she's had any problems with it.

  5. Give the “Quilt Police” a kick in the pants and show them the door! The scrappy sashing doesn’t have to line up - that’s half the joy of scrappy quilts.

  6. I really like the primary colors that you used. Very bright and cheery.

  7. Both quilts are beautiful! I think your scrappy sashing is looking pretty. I use a different type of marker but have read comments of people having issues with it. Fortunately, I have never had a problem but I always launder in cool water. It seems as though heat can set the marks. Good luck. Hope you get back to the hexagons because I want to see the completed top.

  8. Your quilts are so pretty. Tape should work! They have that new purple tape too:)

  9. Oh gosh, I hope your pen will wash out. Although I like the masking tape idea, I'd be happy to send you all the marking tools I have. They'll be old but barely used. Back in the day, I was going to learn to sew and become highly skilled. Sadly, with my sewing 'skills' (said sarcastically) I don't see ever having a need for marking tools in my future.

  10. There will be a way for the pen to wash out. If I managed to get permanent marker out of a white shirt, there will be a way to get the blue marks out of your quilt. I don't know what products you have in your part of the world but there will be tools for just this sort of problem.
