Home Improvement

It's STILL raining. Cats and dogs. We piled Pup in the car with her stroller and off we went to Lowes yesterday. It's our go-to spot to shop for house stuff because they let dogs in.

We got a big cart and filled it up. If we can't do wood and we can't work in the kitchen, we can get some other little jobs done around the house.

We are tiling the foyer and the downstairs landing with this wood look tile. It looks a lot like the vinyl plank we are putting in the kitchen/dining room but it should stand up better to the mud and wet that gets drug in on a daily basis anymore.

We also took a look at the kitchen section while we were there. Here's where you can help me. I've had a pretty plain kitchen all these years and some of these new fangled things are a mystery to me. Under counter sink-yay or nay? Tell me what you know about them please.

Over the stove microwave? Or fancy modern range hood?

I hate my glass top stove. I can't keep it clean. I was happy to see they still have old fashioned electric burners. Yay or nay?

I don't need an opinion on my new front door. This is the one I am getting-as soon as we finish the tile.

  1. My opinions? I have an under the counter sink and I LOVE it. So much easier to clean. Just sweep things into the sink from the counter with no sink rim for junk to get caught on.
I have an over the stove microwave and also love it. The fan/vent works great for venting odors and I like the convenience of having it over the stove and not taking up room on the countertop. It's BIG too, which is nice.
I had a glass top stove in our old house and I'm with you on keeping it clean. Or at least trying to keep it clean. It seemed like an impossible task. Boil water? You would have to clean the stovetop. I would go with the electric burners. I have a gas cooktop now which I really love, but maybe that's not an option for you. I know Mandy had propane when she lived in Edgewater.
So. There you have it. My opinions for what they're worth. :-)
    Blessings,
    Betsy

    1. I thought of something else while I was sleeping last night. :-) My under the counter sink is one big sink and I would never go back to two if I have a choice. I have a dishpan for the rare times I need two sinks but mostly I love the space for my big pans and cookie sheets. Okay. Enough of my opinions.

  2. I would like n over the stove microwave to save counter space...but then someone I know often spills things when taking them out of the microwave. Geeze..easier to clean the counter. I have a glass top stove and love it and have no problem keeping it clean. Regular gas is not an option in my neighborhood, or I would go with a gas stove. Under the counter sink looks nice. I wish I had one BIG sink instead of a double one. Some of my big pans won't fit in the sink I have!

  4. I don't have a lot of experience but here's my two cents.
I love the look of the glass top ranges, but the old coil style is so much easier.... not just to clean, but to replace an element too.

I also like the over the stove microwaves. I think it's an ideal use of space, and I wish we had one (Mom has one - her kitchen is a little galley so it works perfect). The only caution is make sure you do your measurements carefully - if they are too tall by just a bit, it can make using the stove top a little frustrating.

I'm no help on the sink though.

  5. I am too short for an over the range microwave. I would burn my boogs off!

  6. I would also be worried about dropping something out of the microwave and breaking the glass top on the stove. A friend recently did it and the replacement glass top would have been about 800 dollars. Ouch.

  7. I love your front door!!! I would go for under counter sink simply because there is nowhere for crud to get trapped and cleanup is so much easier. I would go for microwave over stove simply because I have never seen a vent hood that I like. I am short (5'3") and can manage the microwave over the stove with no problem. I have never had a glass top stove but my experience from the times I have used one is that I would not want that type of stove.

  8. I have been looking at new appliances too. It is an adventure. I have a Jenn Air Glass cooktop now and I love it. Yes for microwave above the stove. Yes for under counter mount sink...you can sweep stuff right off the counter! LOve that front door and I bet you will love your tile...remember to use dirt colored grout!

  9. The only thing I have experience with is the over-the-stove microwave. We had a counter microwave forever and then had one installed over the range. I love the extra counter space but am often nervous of taking larger containers from the microwave - getting older and losing strength in my hands and shoulders (sad face). So happy that things are moving along in spite of the yucky weather! Pup is, as always, adorable!

  10. Love the door! I have no experience, but I'd say nay on the sink. If something goes wrong with it, you'll have to tear up your countertop to replace the sink. As for stoves, my favorite is gas but I'd MUCH rather have the old fashioned electric than a glass top. We have the glass top here in this house and I have never hated an appliance so much. If I could move it, I'd pick it up and throw it out into the swamp. As for microwaves, I love the over the stove versions.

  11. I love the look of the new under-counter sink-wish we had gone with one! I am a major dropper but I've never had trouble with that --I love my over the glass top stove microwave!! Great front door choice!
