Little House in the Big Woods

I think I was born in the wrong century. Before everyone was up I was sewing the binding down on a quilt. That's the one I quilted by hand.

Then it was off to a few hours of sawing trees into fire wood. The Mister saws. I stack. I've got him convinced we need a trailer for the riding mower. Carrying all this heavy wood from place to place is getting old.

Don't worry. I've got protection this time. I'm NOT doing that poison ivy thing again. At least I hope not.

I was tired after all that fresh air but I made soap. I've got a lot to make.

Unlike Ma Ingalls, I did not have a pot of beans simmering on the back burner all day so we had Chinese.

My blue martini was also not something you would find on the Little House table but it was good.

Later that night instead of listening to Pa playing his fiddle around the fire, I was spinning to Game of Thrones. I know, I'm the last person on the planet to watch it but it took me a lot of courage to get past the first season. I am a real sissy when it comes to violence and cruelty but I have to say now I'm hooked. All it took was the dragons. I do love those dragons.

  1. Sounds like a productive day with a few VERY nice rewards at the end.

  3. What a lovely quilt you have made!! And the soap colors and swirls and (I know) fragrances -- Spring, please come!
I vote for a cart to haul the wood, too! Those are some sizable trees!

  4. Whoa, those trees are big! You definitely need a trailer to help you haul the wood, either that or "Pa" needs a team of horses to drag the logs.

  5. No I am the last person on the planet to watch it, I haven't even attempted it yet. Remember the locusts ruining the crop, it was devastating to read as a little one.

  6. With the exception of the wood stacking, it looks like you had a fantastic day. And yes, you definitely need a trailer. Good luck with the poison ivy.

  7. My goodness you got a lot done! Love the quilt and the wheel and glad it wasn’t me stacking that firewood! Ha! Your soap looks great. Blessings, Betsy

  8. What a productive day! Glad you have a plan/defense against the poison ivy. I think you could make good use of a trailer with all that wood to move. Your Chinese takeout looks delicious.

  9. You might actually make it as a pioneer girl. You certainly have a lot of skills!
I just love your Dresden Plate quilt. I can't believe you quilted it by hand! And that is some of the prettiest soap you've ever turned out.

  10. Your soap looks amazing. I'm sure it smells good too. I always enjoy using them, and I like the colors you chose this time. If you're interested in dragons, you should check out Temeraire by Naomi Novik. It's an 8 book series and has a fantastic audio version, if you have never read it before I really can't recommend it enough. Also The Last Dragon by Silvana de Mari, it has a very funny dragon although I'm still waiting for the next book to be translated into English. And one last one, Seraphina by Rachel Hartman, the dragons in this book are really unique and I love the way they can appear human. I'm sorry I don't have any TV show suggestions, since it's easier to spin/knit/crochet and watch something than to read a book, but maybe you can enjoy the audiobooks.

  11. Deb, do you use a large hoop when you hand quilt? I started a quilt for one of my sisters I think a year ago. I have it sandwiched and have just been so intimidated to try to quilt it by my machine. So the other day I decided I was going to hand quilt it. I sat there for ever trying to use a small hoop and got disgusted. Then I googled how to quilt by hand and saw to use a large hoop. THEN I remembered you do hand quilting. So I started quilting it by hand without a hoop. I love it. It'll take me forever to finish it but for now it's therapeutic and a destresser from work.

    1. I go back and forth between using no hoop and using a very large one. I can't get to the edges with a hoop so I have to do without and it works just fine. I used to have a floor frame like my great grandmother had but it was a real pain. I could never get my hands in the right place.
