Soap Tales

I haven't forgotten about my winter soap giveaway. I've got the soap wrapped and ready to go and....

....I've been working on the little instruction cards I like to include.

But....the big snow upended my plans this week since I can't get out to the post office. Instead, I've been stuck inside trying to use up a half gallon of buttermilk that The Mister brought home last weekend when I had the bug to make scones. I've made scones, waffles, biscuits and soda bread and I still had a lot left so......

I made soap with it. I made some buttermilk soap.

I made this small batch of leftover buttermilk soap after last year's St Patrick's Day dinner and I loved it so much I didn't share it. I used it up all summer.

This time I made plenty to go around so if it turns out, later in the spring it'll be ready to go to a new home. It's an unscented bastille soap made of mostly olive oil so it will take a much longer time to cure but I assure you...it's worth it. As for the winter giveaway, maybe on Sunday? If we don't get anymore snow this weekend. I've heard our expected Nor'easter has turned to rain. Good.

  1. Buttermilk soap sounds lovely and I bet it makes your skin feel good, too.

  2. I used to buy buttermilk for one recipe and always ended up throwing out most of the jug of it. Now I just add lemon or vinegar to a cup of milk and that works fine!

  3. Im hoping the weather here holds until Sunday. I bought a pile of food for a family get together last Saturday but my brother got snowed in so it didn't happen - most of the food we were able to keep until this weekend - but if it happens again.... Dave and I are going to have to start eating!

  4. Such beautiful soap! And I can just imagine how soft and gentle buttermilk soap would be.

  5. Buttermilk soap sounds very interesting. I would love it if our winter weather advisory would be a bust and we only got rain. We will probably get some rain in the mix but freezing rain added to sleet and snow. UGH!

  6. Buttermilk, at least for me, is miserable to drink, but fantastic as an ingredient is so many things.

  7. Oh the soap sounds lovely. I always make buttermilk french toast. I also have an old recipe for an Amish Friendship bread which we devour. You would think I could use up a 1/2 gallon easily but it just never seems to happen.
