Reunited

Mom drifted off gently into the good night but Daddio put up a fierce fight. I never expected anything less from him. He was an ornery sucker who drove us all nuts with his particular brand of goofiness. Pneumonia took him in the blink of an eye. He was fine when I saw him on Monday but by Wednesday he was desperately ill.

Surrounded by his three girls he entered into eternity after an epic 24 hour battle against the dying of the light-which was odd because he had spent the last 15 years anxiously waiting to join the love of his life. Wherever he's landed, I hope he's found her.

Right before the holidays I showed him a photo of my house lit up in Christmas lights. Although he wasn't really speaking anymore I asked him if he knew what it was and he said...."a shot of whiskey". His roommate and I had a good laugh.

Tonight I am having a shot (or two) of his favorite whiskey and having a good cry. Cheers, Daddio.  Let's toast to the end of an era. There will never be another you. Meet you on the other side.

  4. My Father put up a good fight, with pneumonia actually taking him fast. When he was in the hospital I just kept sensing a younger version of my Mom reaching out for his hand, I kept telling him to go to her, she was waiting. I know your parents are so happy to be together, but I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you feel peaceful about it, you have been very devoted and loving to your Dad. Sending you love and a big, big hug.

  5. From the way you make him sound, there's no way he hasn't joyfully found your mom. And now they are together again, well, whole, and happy. Though I know you feel sad, and will never stop missing him, I hope you feel relief that he doesn't have to struggle anymore. xoxo

  10. I wish I could give you a huge hug right now. Grief is never easy, but you have been so devoted to him, you know you did your best for him. Put yourself first for awhile because you need it whether you realize it or not. Losing parents is so, so hard. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of mine in some memory or another of something they did or said. I wish you SO much love right now.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  17. I know I haven't been around for a long time, but I came back to catch up and to see how Daddio was doing. He always caught my eye.
I just know in my heart he is with your Mum and they are both always with you. Til you all really see each other again.
    My thoughts are with you.
