Week Six

Pup's been recovering very well this week. I am encouraged. She doesn't need the cone or the pajamas to keep her from chewing her legs off anymore. Her poor ears are healing nicely too. She can even hold them up again when she's trying to be a good girl in order to get her reward for putting up with her treatments and isolation. That's a McDonald's chicken nugget-her favorite thing in the whole world. I keep them in the freezer and take one out when I need it. All the critters got their second dose so we are hoping for even more rapid improvement in the weeks ahead. I just wish Pup would start growing hair on her bald spots. If she doesn't she's going to be one weird looking dog.

The Mister and I are starting to show some improvement also. Mange mites can explore you but they can't colonize humans like they did poor Pup so if we can catch any new spots early on we've learned we can avoid a whole lot of damage. The Mister is doing pretty well with his sulfur remedies. I can't use them because of the stinky fumes but I have discovered that Dawn and sea salt scrubs work just as well when followed by a splash of vinegar and tea tree oil tonic and a thick covering of calamine lotion. The point is to make yourself an inhospitable host. We are still scrubbing and boiling everything in the house all day and will probably have to continue for at least 2 months after we declare a victory of sorts. We've settled into quite a weird routine but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

  2. I'm so glad there is some light at the end of your tunnel. Pup will grow the fur back. Jem lost a bunch of patches when she had the babies - it took a while, but her coat has all filled in and is as beautiful and shiny as ever.
