TNT: Old Things, New Things
I don't have much progress to show off on this last TNT of the year. I finished the honeycomb section, the snowflake under it and started a geometric motif under the tulips on the Christmas Quaker. I won't put it away until that section is finished. Santa on the other hand is going in time out until the Christmas bug hits me next year.
Plum Pudding is going along with Santa. I didn't get too far this Christmas but I did learn a lot about Victorian cross stitch.
What's new is that I have reclaimed my dining room table for a day at least. As soon as The Mister broke down his Christmas puzzles I jumped on it.
Until the tree comes down I can't get into the sewing room to work but I really wanted to get the Patchwork into a sandwich. I spent a ridiculous amount of time yesterday wrestling with it. I really dislike this part of the process but the pool noodle method does make it a bit easier. I was hoping to not have to drag them out but my first attempt without them was pitiful.
Now it's all hooped up and ready for me to start working on it. I struggled to make the decision to hand quilt it but I told myself that it took over a year to do all this paper piecing and appliqueing so why am I rushing the quilting?
My machine quilting is abysmal. My hand quilting is not much better but at least I can control the outcome. This is an example of one of my great grandmother's quilts I have. Look at all those tiny stitches. This is how high the bar has always been for such things. I wish I knew her secret.
Pretty things - ALL of them! Christmas Quaker is such a lovely design.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt does look really nice in the hoop, all ready for quilting. I think you made a good decision to hand quilt it (said by someone who has only ever quilted a few placemats)!
ReplyDeleteI applaud you for hand quilting! I would NEVER have the patience!
ReplyDeleteI love the quaker cross stitch, also had a soft spot for them. We were in the camper for Christmas as we wanted to be back at the coast, dry but very windy. Unfortunately I picked up a cold/cough so won't be doing much for New Year !. Wishing you all the best for 2026 xxx
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is beautiful! It will be just awesome when quilted. One reason the older quilts have such charm is because of all the laundering and usage. The just get softer and puffier with age.
ReplyDeleteI think your new quilt is beautiful. What a memory you will have when it's finished and it will be an heirloom for your family. I have also hand stitched quilts and know how much time and patience it takes. I applaud you my friend.
ReplyDeleteBlessings and love,
Betsy
I picture you waiting just out of Mister's line of sight, then POUNCING as soon as the table was clear. 😄
ReplyDeleteThe plum pudding is adorable! I love how it is turning out!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quilt top. I enjoy hand quilting but it does take time. There is a special kind of beauty in the old quilts. The sampler is quite a project with so many stitches. It will be a work of art when it is finished, how ever long it takes.
ReplyDeleteYou do just fine with your hand stitching!!! The quilt will be a treasure!
