Gray Matter

After all that gray yarn drama of a few weeks ago, I finally found what I was looking for. Some of Knit Picks shorty interchangeables came along for the ride. I thought they might work with the thrummed mittens but they won't. They will work with hats though.

This will be the yarn that binds all those Audun squares together someday. I'm not actually finished with the squares. Maybe when life calms down I'll get back to them.

In good news, after a very long day in court The Mister did NOT make it through the jury selection process and got sent home. Instead of a week or more of downstairs quarantine he should be good to go by Sunday if he tests negative. It's a good thing I have a big pile of those free Covid tests. He was shoved in a little room with around 100 pretty much all unmasked folks for over 6 hours.

And.....I just realized it's our wedding anniversary today. After all we've been through in just the past few months it's a miracle we are still speaking to each other. I guess that thing about misery loving company is true. It's certainly been a long, strange trip.

Life Interupted

Just when things start to calm down around here, the stuff always hits the fan. As soon as the sun came up yesterday I as off on the long drive to the emergency vet-again.

No, not Pup this time. It was this guy. I was up all night with the poor fella watching him struggling to breathe. He is one of the indoor/outdoor kitties and he's been sleeping outside since the weather has warmed up and in all the hubbub with Pup and her leg I didn't notice he was in trouble. Thankfully the vet thinks it's just a really bad sinus infection. He got a shot and some pills and I've got my fingers crossed he will be on the mend soon. My house looks like an animal hospital. Pup still penned up in the living room and now a sick kitty in the kitchen. It never ends.

But that's not all......The Mister got called up for jury duty this week so I am having all this fun all by myself. This was going to be the week that Pup came out of her pen and we put the house back together and started living a normal life again but that's not happening now.

And.......since there is NO WAY we can both get Covid at the same time with all this pet drama going on, so in an abundance of caution he's going to be quarantined downstairs when he comes home. It's a particularly horrific trial with over a hundred potential jurors all being shoved in little conference rooms. The Covid numbers here are surging and no one is wearing masks anymore and the friends I have that have picked up the new variant have been very sick. I can't imagine dealing with all these broken critters while being sick myself so I made him up a little kitchen downstairs where he can just shut himself away until we get a few days of negative tests behind us to be on the safe side.

Trying to settle my brain with all this is impossible. I have the Tour on in the background but I am running around taking care of business instead of spinning or knitting. I did manage to clear off the dining room table and set up a sewing area so maybe.....just maybe I can still work a little on the baby quilt. As I've said many, many times before...it's always something and I'm so very, very tired of it.

Tiny Needle Tuesday

Thanks to my new light I am still speeding through the latest baby sampler. I've almost managed to keep to my one block a day schedule but there was a lot of outlining and corner work to do this week.

The soon to be Baby Grand Number 5's quilt has been cut into blocks.....

.....and I've spent a ridiculous amount of time staring at my layout to try and get everything to where it looks right. This is always the hardest part for me because I swear no matter how many time I check things over, when I go to sew it all together there is always something where it shouldn't be.

Ain't Life Grand

The Mister and I have been struggling to get the furniture put back where it belongs. We're not as young as we used to be so Daughter and SIL volunteered to come down yesterday to help us shift things around. That means.........

....the latest baby Grand came along for the ride. I haven't seen him in person since he was an itty bitty thing last winter.

While the big folk were dragging furniture up and down the stairs I wowed the little fella with my juggling skills. Cirque du Soleil I am not-but he won't know that for a few years yet.

Yippee Ki Yay

I really needed to sew these charms squares together but I've been stuck on Pup watch for what seems like forever.

If I can't get to the sewing machine, the sewing machine needed to come to me so I set it up on the ironing board in Pup's pen and spent yesterday afternoon doing a balancing act while sewing those squares.

They are going to be cut up for another Disappearing Nine Patch baby quilt. It will be Number 5 for the Grand due in September. I had a big scare thinking I didn't have enough of the charm squares but after looking at photos of the quilts I made before I realized that I have more than enough-if I manage to cut them all correctly that is. I have been known to get a little wild and crazy with the rotary cutter.

Out and About

Someone took a ride yesterday and it was NOT to the vet's for a change.

Since we were all up before the sun we thought we would take Pup out for her first walk in months. She wasn't too sure about it at first. Every trip out has ended in something awful for her lately but not yesterday.

It was a very short walk since she still is not very steady on her feet. You can see here how nicely the incision has healed and how her hair is starting to grow back. She still can't push off very well on that leg. It's pretty weak in spite of all the therapy I'm doing every day.

Since we haven't been out in ages we expected some changes in the landscape but weren't prepared for what we discovered. Our local produce store was practically empty and is for sale. That porch is usually covered in pretty things to plant and a seafood station but not now. That's sad.

In the early morning hours you can hear the crab boats making their rounds but yesterday there was only one to be seen. For the first time in history they have had to put a limit on how many you can harvest. The bay is in trouble again. That's bad.

The big Inn on the corner is closing. They just added a bed and breakfast in an adjacent building and a rental cottage so that was a surprise.

The antique store in the heart of town is also for sale. That's Pup's favorite bench right there. It's where we used to sit and wait for The Mister to come out of the coffee shop across the street with a scone or a cookie.

Thank goodness the coffee shop is still there although it did change hands not too long ago. Pup's had a hard enough year without losing her favorite hang out.

Brief as it was, the early morning walk wore Pup out. Me too. We had a nice long nap when we got home.

Week One

It's hard to believe one whole week of the Tour has gone by. This year is flying by. In spite of Pup's aversion to the wheel, I've managed to get a bit done.

I've only got two spindle projects going this year which is more than enough.

I was tempted to start another spindle project with some pretty Merino locks I found while cleaning up the craft room but I didn't. Same for those two bobbins of California Red I found in the same basket. I could have drug out another wheel and carded up some of the fiber I have stashed away but-not this year. My self control in the midst of this chaos has been surprising.....

...but I do still have my other fiber projects to keep me busy while watching the riders every morning. Thrumming is a bit fiddly and can get monotonous pretty quickly but these aren't. I even remembered to knit in the waste yarn for the thumb this time. Last year I forgot and had to rip out an almost finished mitten.
