Speckles Part 2

Some of you asked about the forking thing I did to my handspun yesterday. This is what started it all-the speckled yarn trend. It was even on the Ravelry's home page yesterday. I read about it on a blog post here. There is even a video on the page.

First I soaked the skein in a strong vinegar water solution and then let it drain in the sink for awhile.

Then I dipped my plastic fork in my Jacquard acid dye and then touched the yarn with it. I tried to put blue dots on blue yarn, pink on pink and so forth. I went too far when I added navy blue. I should have stopped with the lighter dots.

I don't think I got the underside of the skein very well because my dots are a bit far apart. They are also more like splotches than speckles. I just might have to try this again.

  2. I think the base you started with had a lot to do with the results you have also. Try it with a solid colored base and it will show more-it is still a very pretty yarn now!

  4. Before I try this I need to know if you can get the dye out of the sink afterwards. LOL

  5. Yes this trend is very hot! I saw it on the Ravelry and also other small yarn dyers are featuring these yarns. I'll be honest part of the reason I'm drawn to them is that they seem like great for socks with contrasting toe and heels, more so than variegated. I don't know if that makes sense. That and they look like sprinkles up close.

  6. I love the speckled yarns. I didn't realize it was a trend though. I've been liking them for a while! You mean I'm ahead of the trend for a change?! That never happens. Thank you for explaining how you made your speckled yarn. I always learn so much from your blog posts. Blessings, Betsy

  9. Here's a couple other speckle techniques to try:

Dip a paint brush in your dye, then run you finger along the bristles, splattering it on the yarn (this gets messy, so cover everything around in plastic!

Use a turkey baster or eyedropper - suck up a bunch of dye then randomly drop it all over your yarn. (you can use old squirt bottles for this too). The Turkey Baster is little Rowan's favourite dye tool.
