Not Exactly a Gold Medal Moment

Just as the final seconds ticked off the clock of yesterday's spectacular USA/Japan soccer game, I put the final stitches in the Sheep Heid.

While the ladies were getting their medals, it went for a swim.


I stretched it out on a dinner plate to give it the tam shaping and was tickled beyond words at the beauty of it. I did that. I washed, dyed and spun that wool. Me. Me. Me. It was time to get up on that podium.

I flipped it over to admire the pretty sheep and it was then that I realized in complete horror, that my sweet little hat was HUGE. GIANT. ENORMOUS. I didn't even come close to making a hat. I made a wool lampshade. Seriously. It seemed to be sized correctly while I was working on it. I had jammed it on my head from time to time and it fit fine but I never actually checked the gauge. Yes, I know. You don't have to say it-I feel bad enough.

Oh well, it's no big deal. It's not like I haven't done this before. This is my Ravelympic 2010 project.
 In 2014, I am making socks dammit.

    It's so darn cute, is it possible to put it in the dryer and shrink it?

      Duh...I had to delete the first comment because I couldn't spell washing. What I was trying to say is that I will be washing it again to felt it slightly. Now that it is dry, it is not so big after all. I must have a big head. :(

    I agree with Sandy, it is cute. Another suggestion, run some elastic thread through the ribbing to tighteb it. I know JoAmm's has it and it does come in black. Find a way to wear it you did good!!

      That is another great idea. I am going to need to tighten up that ribbing even if I do felt it because I will lose that stretch. Tams have a weird fit.

      Yup. That is because that is the third hat I made in that pattern and none of them fit. I am surprised smoke wasn't coming out of my ears.

    Regardless of size - the knitting is spectacular!

    When I designed my wildwood beret, I was amazed at how much the prototype grew in the blocking - but it was lace too. I refined the finished version by going down a needle size.

    my too big hats usually get a row of tight crochet around the rim to pull them into submission. ;)
    love that you died it and spun it and all. really cute Tam.
