Duck, Duck, Goose

It's been so cold here that the seagulls have been ice skating on the bay but warmer weather is on the way I hear.

Last weekend we were on a walk on the railway trail, a place we usually have to ourselves, when a big crowd of very excited folks with giant cameras on tripods descended upon us.

It seems that there was a sighting of one of these unassuming little ducks. It's a Barrow's Golden Eye and apparently they are very rare in these parts. It went swimming by with a bunch of mallards, completely unaware of its celebrity status and then disappeared under the dock much to the crowd's dismay. What I'd like to know is how all those people knew it was here in the first place. So many questions.

  1. Well that had to be fun to get to see the guy! Research it! The GreatBAckyard Bird Count is maybe responsible for spreading the word--FB group.

  2. It does look sweet and soft, but hardly something to stir excitement in me. I had no idea there were celebrity ducks!

  3. Birdwatchers are a bit crazy - lol (ask me how I know!) I get super excited when there's a new bird in the yard. My guess is there's a facebook group or something like it - someone posted a sighting and BAM they all rush down to see it.
If you haven't seen it - I recommend watching The Big Year (Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black) -it's a very silly movie they gives you insight to those crazy birders!

  4. Great picture of the "famous" duck. I too often wonder how a large group of people find out about a sighting - group text?

  5. Out in my neck o' the woods, the birders have a very lively online presence where they share what they find and where they find it. I wonder if they work the same way out by you?

  6. You're right, I wonder how they knew. It sure is a cute little duck though.

  7. The best famous folks are the ones who don't care that they're famous. (And weren't the shutterbugs afraid all their commotion would scare him away?)
