Labor Day

While everyone else was off making merry, The Mister and I spent the holiday weekend working our behinds off.

This is what started it. Are you familiar with the children's book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie? That's how it all rolled out around here. First I wanted to go buy this wall unit from Ikea for the living room so I would have a place for my million and one projects. I'm tired of my house looking like a cluttered mess. I want a place for everything and everything in a place. This oughta do it.

The Mister said okay but first I had to refinish our terrible looking oak floors. Then we realized it made even more sense to go ahead and paint before we did the floors. Ugh.

Packing, scrubbing, sanding, painting, mopping. Three days of hard work and all for nothing. When I went to buy my shelving unit Ikea didn't have it. I'd have to order it and have it delivered for a small fortune. Darn.

  1. Oh that IS disappointing. Could you find something similar at a woodworking place. You would just have to finish the color.

OR --- I'm surprised how much WalMart and BigLots sometimes have in furniture units.

  4. I've been catchinv up on two years of housework so I feel your pain. Too bad about Ikea, but maybe you can check Craigslist furniture listing. If you check the dealer box, new furniture is listed, peehaps you can find something similar.

  5. Years ago, when we turned our garage into my studio, I had a whole wall (and around the corner to the next wall up to a window) of shelves built in. I took a photo of the shelves before I put anything on them and sent the photo to a friend, saying "Enough shelves for you?" She replied, "There are NEVER enough shelves."

  6. Oh my - that sounds almost exactly like what my parents did a few months back. They decided to use their tax return to put new flooring in the livingroom, dining room and hall. The ended up finding it on sale, so they go enough to do the three bedrooms as well. They started with the livingroom and once Dad got the old carpet out, he thought... "we really should paint the room - it's overdue, and it'd be better to do it before we put the floor down" So they got the paint, put in the floor and moved onto the didning room...of course it -and all the bedrooms - needed to be repainted too.... so a project that was suppose to just take a month in April, has now spread all summer. Only one bedroom left to do now. Of course... now that those rooms are all nice and shiny and new... Mom's looking at the bathroom, thinking it's looking a little bit shabby....

    It's a slippery slope!

Of course, I think your organizer is totally going to be worth it. I need something like that for my studio.

  12. We call those projects "domino projects" when one thing leads to another. Your hard work sure paid off though!
