Someone asked me to do a post about on how I stitch. I am no expert but I do know what I like and I like this little floor stand I picked up on Amazon. It wasn't very expensive.

It took a while to get used to it. I wanted to use it with my Q Snaps and they don't really fit the way you would want them to.

What I figured out was to only put in two of the stretchers. One on each side. The top can then slide up into the little groove that is meant for a smaller hoop. I hate hoops. They leave marks and I hate marks. I don't tighten the thing down. I just rest in there so I can pull it out easily when I need to snip the back. I am a two handed stitcher and this has made a world of difference in terms of speed and comfort.  I also like that I can stick the part of pattern I am working on right on the frame so I can see what I am stitching.

I don't keep the project on the floor stand or in the Q snaps once I have to place the stretchers over stitched work. It's a pain to get it out every time and rig it up but it's the price you pay not to have a wrinkled mess. I use one of those scrapbooking cases for each project. That way I can just pick up the one I need and get on with it.

These pricey dedicated lap stands are the best for avoiding wrinkles but I find them uncomfortable to work with. I have to hunch over to see what I'm doing. Having said that, I have two of them and use them quite a bit.
I am also always looking for better ways. If you are a stitcher, what do you use?

  1. I also have two of the roller lap stands but tend to not use anything and just hold the fabric in my hand. I like that floor stand.

  2. Thanks for showing your stitching setups. I haven't done any cross-stitch for years. I used hoops because I like my work taut. I used a roll frame a couple of times with crewel embroidery, but found it was too loose for my liking.

  3. I used hoops back in the day . Now my eyes aren't able to focus that well on the tiny stitches and charts. Thank goodness there is always color by number for the future!

  4. I like the idea of the stand. I haven't done as much of this in the last few years because I just can't see like I used to. I did pick up some new magnified readers (yay Amazon!) so I think I will give it a whirl again this winter, I have a project in the works if it hasn't rotted and fallen apart by now :/

  5. I always used a stand with a long reach so it would pull right up close over my lap; it had the scrolling which was great so that there were no wrinkles. I tried the one that went on my lap but it never worked just right for my height or comfort-it wasn't comfortable unfortunately!

  6. I'm a hoop-er, too, but your set-up looks great!
