85

This is what 85 looks like.

The most important thing in life is getting outside for a smoke but now you have to wait for someone to help you out. 85 year olds have been smoking for about 70 years. Everyone did it back then and they did it everywhere. Just try and find a movie on TCM where everyone is not smoking.

85 also means a belly full of pills with your morning coffee.

Keeping the mind going now takes work.

85 means lifting your toes is now considered an exercise.

85 means having many, many tubs of personal product samples from hospitals and nursing homes all over the house.

It also means a chair in the shower and needing help getting on and off it.

The remote is suddenly too high tech and notes are needed to find your favorite stations.

85 means watching babies grow up by mail. They hardly ever come to visit-probably because of all the smoking.

85 means having more loved ones that were than are. It's tough. There's little comfort left in the memories of what was.

 Daddio turned 85 today.

He'll be the first to tell you that growing old ain't for sissies. Taking care of those that are growing old ain't for sissies either.

  1. Sending a hug....I've got tears for both of you; my Dad is just behind in age . It's good to take notes, thanks for this poignant post.

  2. Happy Birthday to Daddio!

    I read this

"He'll be the first to tell you that growing old ain't for sissies. Taking care of those that are growing old ain't for sissies either."

And totally thought, seriously lady, big thumbs up to you both (and your family). It's hard work, physically, emotionally -- heart breaking at times just to read. It's also quite obviously an example of your quality and the heart and love of you both.

  4. And may he have many more!

My grandpa didn't live quite as long as Daddio has, but he smoked right up until the end. Even when he was diagnosed with lung cancer... because... it was too late by then so why bother quitting now?
